What do I do if my site is over-optimized for a keyword?

You will need to do two things to correct over-optimization:

  1. Stop linking to your site with the keyword, and
  2. Start linking to your site with its domain name (URL) as your keyword.

We find that the more natural percentage that Google likes for non-essential keywords and URLs as anchor text is about 40%
